I was recently going through his older messages and came across this from 2017. In here, Francis Chan talked about how he overcame his theology of cessationism (basically a theology that the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit are done away with after the first church since we now have the Bible.) You should listen to this because this debate is still going on in the church. For a moment I also became a cessationist. I think my college church split up because of this debate too in the leadership. I wasn’t there when they split but that’s what I gathered from a conversation I had with a church friend who was still in our college. Unfortunately that was the last straw for me. I left the church, not finding another suitable home church once I graduated. I tried for about half a year and was considering visiting my college church one weekend to refresh myself when the news of their split came. I guess this is why I feel compelled to be available and stable in my faith for those who have moved on from my small groups. It’s nice when they reach out to me in times of crisis or personal needs.
For the nonbelievers, seekers and young believers; they really need to see unity and love in the church community. We don’t have to agree on every theological doctrines but we need to have unity and respect for each other. I’ve had many debates with believers about variety of religious doctrines, politics, policies, and culture. Sometimes the discussion can get heated. Since I personally understand how important it is to maintain our unity, I do my best to keep our relationship over being right. That means that I am the one who end the conversation graciously when I see that we won’t agree on the subject. In light of eternity, who cares. That subject won’t matter in 500 hundred years. What matters is that I’m involved in their life so that in times of crisis and near death, I can help them through their crisis and most importantly point them to Jesus Christ.
