King Asa + Psalm 112

I recently shared this message with my prayer group ladies. Unlike a bible study group which I also lead and facilitate at my church, I find leading and facilitating prayer groups to be A LOT more challenging. I wrestled about the reasons why. I think Corrie ten Boom summarized it well from the devil’s perspective.

I love reading and listening to testimonies of God’s love and faithfulness especially by older people in the faith. I heard that my grandmother in my mom’s side was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Since we live in the USA, we didn’t get to know her well. My mom would share stories with me that her mom would attend her local church’s early morning prayers later in her life. Perhaps my ease of waking up early to do my quiet time comes from my grandmother.
If like me, you also did not observe closely someone who lived life for Jesus Christ, then you must seek out stories shared by other elderly believers. It is so powerful to hear about God’s goodness and faithfulness over a lifetime by a mature follower of Jesus Christ. Their stories are so faith-building and give us guidance on how we should live and follow in their footsteps if we desire their ending.

Last week I was very challenged with this attribute of God when in our Bible study discussion, a member brought up the story about the serial killer, rapist and cannibal who became a born-again believer while in prison, right before he was murdered by an inmate. My 8-pound brain froze and crashed like an old computer without capacity to comprehend God’s mercy extending to this serial killer. Honestly, I am still in shock at the unfairness of this situation. I have been saying to myself, “God, how can you be so merciful and kind to this super evil, wicked person?! How can you let him into heaven in his last hour? He didn’t even have time to prove his genuineness of faith and even suffer for a long time for his wrongdoings. It’s just not fair.”

Carrie is a friend from church with Huntington disease. We just visited her and I am so astonished how much she has deteriorated during the last two years of the pandemic. I am challenged again to seek out the ins-and-outs of healing and miracles. It’s a topic that I’ve put on the shelf because of my frustrations and unbelief. Dear Lord Jesus, I repent of my unbelief and lack of love for others’ sufferings. Please have mercy upon me and help your children especially in the western church to believe and ask with faith, hope and love.

I met a few friends through church whose moms truly dedicated themselves to the Lord’s work in humility, love and service since they were young mothers. It doesn’t matter if they are poor in wealth or health, I witness that these mothers are a tremendous blessing to their children and grandchildren even into their old ages. Even if they have to rely upon their children and grandchildren more than ever, they are not regarded as “burdens” to the family but everyone even non-family members are clamoring to help them! On the flip side, I also see my friends in the church community whose parents attended church but were not truly followers of Jesus Christ. They are very needy and difficult as they get older just like everyone else. I desire to be in the small group of elderly parents who are a great blessing into their 80s, if the Lord wants me to live longer. My musing of the week let me to write this for my prayer group ladies.

Hello! I hope you are doing well. In the month of October, I ask you to pray without ceasing for all your church pastors and Christian leaders that you follow online and in-person. Ever since I became a prayer group leader in 2016, I started to not like October month. I’m not the most astute or sensitive in spiritual matters but I find the month of October leading up to Halloween very unnerving and demonic. I encounter many unusual difficulties in both circumstances and relationships. Now I expect this in October and so, I enter this month with my eyes wide open and I stay even closer to God, the Bible and my church community until this month passes by. When November 1st arrives, I breathe a nice long sigh of relief.
